I'm
a HUGE fan of Kevin Smith's movies. They're hilarious,
tell great stories and contain some of the best dialogue in the
biz. And of course no finer characters have ever graced the
silver screen then the inimitable Jay & Silent Bob (played by
Jason Mewes & Kevin Smith his own self). If I were pressed to
pick a favorite movie of all time, it would have to be Chasing
Amy. Go rent it.. no ..go BUY it today! You can learn more
about Kevin's films at the official View
Askew Universe
website (named after his
production company).
While you're at it, you might want to check out Jay & Silent Bob's Secret Stash - Kevin's own comic book store in Red Bank, NJ and outlet for all sorts of goodies related to his films.
Far & away, the
greatest rock & roll band of the 80's (ever in my opinion)
was The Replacements. I could go on forever foaming at the mouth
about their music and the genious of leader Paul Westerberg.
But since a lot of people who are better at this stuff
than myself have devoted entire websites to the same principal,
I'll guide you toward a couple of them. The
Skyway, run
by the incomparable Matt Tomich is probably the oldest and most
comprehensive Mats website ("Mats" is the band's
nickname). Kathy runs the penultimate Unofficial Paul Westerberg Page. Both are well worth checking out.
In my opinion,
few things in the world are as beautiful as a 1960 Les Paul TV
Jr, a 1959 sunburst
Les Paul Standard, a classic
Butterscotch Telecaster, or any other quality American-made
electric guitar. And when I'm jonesin' to mess around with a new
axe or some funky effects pedals, or if I need strings, picks, or
an amp tune-up, there's only two places in the Madison area I
visit. Greg Ginter's Guitar Shop on
Williamson St. in Madison is THE place to find new & vintage
guitars, amps, and all the nifty accessories that go with.
I've heard it said that bananas are
nature's perfect food. I would have to beg to differ and say that
bratwurst takes that honor. But running a close second would
definitely be breakfast cereals (especially Peanut Butter
Cap'n Crunch!). If you grew up on breakfast cereals like I
did, you might also have a fine appreciation
and a fond nostalgia for the finer
brands of yore and the characters that hawked them. On rare
occasions I still run across a box of Quisp but what the heck
ever happened to Quake? And didn't Sonny's family have the heart
to commit him so he wouldn't blow a gasket everytime he got near
some Cocoa Puffs? If these and other cereal-related questions
keep you up at night, you should check out Topher's Breakfast Cereal
Character Guide.
If you're
thinking about getting a dog but don't know what kind to get,
trust me - get a Great Dane! This is our family pet Winston. He's
a little over a year old and weighs somewhere in the region of
140-150 pounds. Most people ask, "What the heck do you want
with such a gigantic dog?" or "Aren't you afraid he
might harm your kids?" (we have a 10 year old & a 5 year
old). But if you've ever been around a dane you'll know that they
are one of the most friendly & gentle breeds there is. They're completely
"people-oriented" and quite intelligent too. The only
danger Winston poses to people is that he's so friendly, he
forgets his size and might knock you over while saying
"hello" (but he's starting obedience class soon to
remedy that). Yeah, the food bill is a bit higher then say a
poodle, but he'll repay you four-fold in love. There are hundreds
of breeders across the country that one could purchase a Dane
from. But you might consider adopting one from a Great Dane Rescue Orginization. We acquired Winston from the Wisconsin Great Dane Rescue based out of Rose Run Kennels in
Cottage Grove, WI (just a few minutes east of Madison). They've
always got lots of "gentle giants" looking for a home.
And if you don't live near southern Wisconsin, you can find all
sorts of breeders & rescue organizations, along with lots of
other Great Dane info through their Links page.
